Create a Website

Plan Your Website - Decide the function of your website.

• Build a map of your website.

• Decide on your sites "look and feel"

• Decide on your content.

• Will you need graphics? (You can find a ton of these by searching Google for gif files or clip art)

Using HTML

• Unless you know or want to learn HTML you will need a "WYSIWYG" (what you see is what you get) HTML editing program, there are free ones you can use, but my favorite "feature loaded" program is XSitePro. It makes building websites easy! 

• If you know or would rather learn HTML, you'll be able to use the "Notebook" program that comes with Windows as your editor. To learn HTML take the HTML Tutorial.

Build Your Website

• Find your Keywords

• Add the pages (found on your website map)

• Fill your pages with original content. This is your site and should be your point of view.

Choose your website host

• There are some free hosting companies out there but unless your site will just be a personal site for family and friends I don't recommend using them.

• You will need a webhost to upload your website to their servers, there are many hosts some of the things to look for in them are;

• "Uptime" you don't want a host that never has your site online.

• I like a host with 2 different servers (this helps with uptime)

• How much control will you need behind the scenes? Will you add e-mail and a blog? Maybe you need a database. Here I recommend using a host that offers a cpanel that offers Fantastico De Luxe, with this option you'll have the best flexibility.

• You may also want to know how many e-mails you can have.

• You can also get free domain names from some hosts.

• You will also probably want a well priced webhost.

• Look for a host with great customer service.

• I use BlueHost for my websites; they offer everything I've listed above plus $50 worth of free adwords, $25 worth of Yahoo services and many other options when you sign up with them. It's a bargain for $6.95 per month.

Upload your website

• FTP (file transfer protocol) is the fastest way to upload your website to your website host. There are FTP programs you can buy. If you're using XSitePro to build your site, you will load your information into the program and it will upload your site for you.

• You can also upload each html page but it is really slow. I definitely recommend you use FTP.

Submit your site to the Search Engines

The best traffic to your site is from Search Engines so this step is important.

• Submit your site to Google here.

• Submit your site to Yahoo here.

• Submit your site to Open Directory here.

Google is the largest and most powerful search engine, so you definitely want them to know about your site.

A lot of small search engines get their information from Yahoo, so submitting your site to Yahoo is very important.

Open Directory is a little different and will be the hardest to be listed in. They are a directory instead of a search engine, which means an actual person has to visit your site from them before they will list you, and if your content isn't good enough they won't list you then.

Directories are harder to be listed in, so why bother with them? If they will list your site the search engines see it and that will add to your ranking with them. Definitely try to get into this directory!

Article Marketing

Writing articles and getting them published will give links back to your site. The Search Engines love this.

A great way to promote your website is by writing articles. I know you may be thinking you don't want to write any articles.

You can join article groups that offer "PLR's" Private Label Rights articles. Here you can use an article that has already been written about your subject.

If you use PLR's you should change up some of the content so that the article isn't identical to 100 or more others on the internet. This will also keep the internet a great resource.

The best articles are original. If you can afford it, have a "ghost writer" write articles for you.

Internet Forum Groups

Another great way to promote your website is through forums. You can find these by searching your site subject + forum try to join forums that are specific to your website's theme.

You might try Yahoo Answers it is a good way to start traffic moving

Paid Advertising

There are many versions of paid advertising;

• Place an ad on someone else's website or even space in the local paper. If you have a big budget radio and TV ads are good to.

• A PPC campaign (pay per click) Google and Yahoo both have these. This is where Google or Yahoo will place your ad on other people's sites for you. You only pay if someone clicks through to your site. You can also tell them how much you'll pay and your total budget, so you control the whole thing.

Webmaster Tools

Submit Express has a lot of great features including;

• Free Search Engine Submission of your site

• Analyze your keywords or your meta tags on your web pages (Keywords, titles, etc...)

• Link popularity check (How many websites link to you)

• Broken Link Checker Be sure to use this Search Engines don't like broken links

This site has a lot of great tools for webmasters. (Highly recommended)

Google Analytics You will have to sign up for this Google service, but it has many features;

• Page views per day, unique views, landing pages, exit pages, how long people stay on your site and a lot more. Check it out for yourself.

Has your website been copied?

There are people that would rather copy your hard work rather than doing their own. Catch them with Copy Scape.

If someone has copied your work it is ill-legal. Most of the time if you contact them they will remove the copied work. Other times you may need to get a lawyer involved. More on Copyrights.

CoRegistration is the latest "Buzz word" in website marketing. If you want to have a list of customers to e-mail to this is a great way to build your list really fast.

How it works is other websites get subscribers for you. Normally this is done on the "thank you" page of the other website. So when someone buys a product from the other website they will ask if that customer would like to receive information from you too, pretty nice huh?
