Affiliate advertising is really pretty simple. First you find someone looking to sell their product; you list their product on your website. When it sells you make a commission. Easy huh?

You can place affiliate advertisements wherever you want on your site. In the content, a separate ad or in pictures.

This ad is an example of affiliate advertising.

With this method of advertising you can create your website, make money and still not sell any products.

There are a lot of people doing this, you'll see these ads or you'll see ads by Google listed on their site. If you click through to one of the ads by Google they receive a commission just for the click. More about that on the Google Adsense Program page.

There are a lot of people on the internet that would love you to sell their product.

What is an affiliate?

You can look at it as being a salesperson... minus the suit, tie, high pressure sales tactics, briefcase, well, you get the picture.

You do get to keep the most important part of being a salesperson though, the commission!

How do I sign up to be an affiliate?

It is really easy; first find a product you want to sell.

Let me talk about being an affiliate for a minute. I like to sell products that I know about, such as XSitePro and Blue Host. I am an affiliate with both of them.

I became an affiliate advertiser of both after I bought their product and used them a while.

I only sign up as an affiliate if I believe in the product. After all if you buy it and don't like it then I've done neither of us any good. I urge you to only sell products you know are good. If I sell a product I don't own I always say so on the site.

As I said I like to buy the products, this way if I don't like it I am not pressured to do anything with it.

Ok, back to the subject. Once you find a product to sell check out the website and look for a link that says affiliate. Once you find it click on it and you're on your way.

How much does it cost to be an affiliate?

It will cost you $0.00. The company you are an affiliate for will ship the product if need be and handle all of the paperwork. All you have to do is collect your commission.

How much commission will I get?

You affiliate commission will vary with the different affiliate marketing programs that you are in. Some will be very small, only a few cents others can be in the thousands of dollars.

When you are signing up as an affiliate the company will tell you how much they offer affiliates.

How will the company know I sent the customer?

After you sign up the company will give you an affiliate username and password, (you may be able to choose these names yourself).

Sign into your affiliate account and find your affiliate url. This will be a url such as www.sellmyproduct.com/your-affiliate-url, when someone goes to a seller's site with that url they know you sent them.

How do I get paid?

This is different between different affiliate programs too. Some will want you to sell a certain dollar amount before they will pay you. They may send you a check, do a direct deposit into your bank account or pay using PayPal.com
